ENERGY AND WATER
The infrastructural necessity for increased energy capacity and water management works brings with it a need for archaeological investigation. Rubicon provide expert advice for energy and water infrastructure developments across Ireland. Our clients have included the Office of Public Works (OPW), county councils, planning consultants as well as both large and small energy companies. In many cases we are working as part of multi-disciplinary teams, to help ensure that the many strands involved with planning applications and groundworks are well integrated.

Our involvement is wide-ranging; it encompasses pre-planning site selection and design advice, the preparation and compilation of detailed archaeological impact assessment reports, handling requests for further information and planning conditions, and when required geophysical survey, test trenching and archaeological monitoring. Through careful assessment and sensitive design, as well as liaison with local authority archaeologists and the National Monuments Service, we offer a one-stop shop for all your archaeological requirements.
FEATURED PROJECTS
Solar Farms
Solar technology is rapidly improving in efficiency and reducing in cost. It offers a long-term, sustainable, and clean form of energy with numerous benefits economically, socially, and environmentally. Solar energy is a relatively new industry in Ireland and the approach by planners to archaeological issues has been evolving over the past few years. Rubicon have developed specific expertise in managing the archaeological elements of solar array developments for our clients. Solar array sites are often chosen due to their location on south-facing slopes within greenfield sites – also a favoured location for past settlements! Rubicon’s experience in dealing with these site types means we can help to pinpoint the archaeological risks and take measures to mitigate them prior to a planning application being submitted. Knowing what to expect at this early stage in the project allows the design team to factor in archaeology and prevent any surprise effects on the project.
Wind Farms
Wind energy is currently the largest contributing resource of renewable energy in Ireland. Future potential as an indigenous reliable and sustainable energy supply, both in terms of onshore and offshore developments, is vast. At Rubicon we are aware of the lengthy timeframes often involved in planning large-scale renewable energy projects. We maintain our services across long periods, which requires high-quality data management and project design. Our proactive approach encompasses specific phases of a project but anticipates the needs and requirements across all phases of a development. This ensures streamlined and cost-effective mitigation and design strategies that minimise risk, avoid delays and unforeseen costs to projects.
Water Schemes and Services
Water resource management is a constantly improving sector of Irish public infrastructure. The supply, treatment and consumption of water is vital to the interests of homes and businesses across the country. Securing a sustainable future for our water requires an awareness and respect for this precious resource. At Rubicon we have wide-ranging involvement with all types of water and wastewater management schemes. Groundworks for supply pipelines, flood alleviation schemes, water quality improvement works, conservation plans and any other services can be multifaceted and complex. We meet the demands of each project with the support of our extensive experience.
